What is arts therapy?

Arts therapy is a form of psychotherapy where the emphasis is on making art as a means of expression.  This is done within a therapeutic relationship with a qualified arts therapist. The arts therapist hopes to empower the client to take what they learn into everyday life for health and wellbeing.

In an arts therapy session the therapist doesn't tell the client what their art means, instead the therapist works with the client to find out what it means for them.  The arts therapist is the expert of the art materials, not the client's life.

The arts therapist carefully considers the art medium and intervention to match the needs, interests, abilities and age of the client. Arts therapy is not just drawing and painting. While the therapist may use these mediums they also work with:

  • clay

  • play

  • sound

  • movement

  • 3D sculptures

  • doll making

  • poetry

  • sand tray

  • storytelling

  • and other visual art media
